Somebody asked me recently, “What the heck is KLB6?” Still around after all these years, this formula is an old-fashioned diet aid was all the rage when I was in college in the 60’s. KLB6 is shorthand for kelp, lecithin and vitamin B6. Our house brand formula also contains apple cider vinegar, but I guess that doesn’t fit easily shorthand into the name, does it?
Today, people still come in and say the combination helps them lose weight. It’s not a magic bullet, but it does help, they say. How can that be? Here are some thoughts…
Kelp, the first ingredient, is a seaweed containing nearly 30 minerals which act as natural diuretics, and regulate metabolism. Rich in iodine, kelp is said to help the body adjust the rate at which it burns calories. And it does a myriad of other good things, too, which are not our focus here.
Lecithin, found commonly both in egg yolks or soybeans, is the second ingredient in the formula. It facilitates the movement of fats, wastes and nutrients in and out of our cells. It is said to lower cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing the good cholesterol (HDL) levels in the blood. My mother used to believe that lecithin helped her burn fat much more efficiently.
While B6 does many things for us, in this context it’s necessary for the synthesis and breakdown of amino acids (the building blocks of protein). It aids in fat and carbohydrate metabolism.
And apple cider vinegar? Entire books have been written about the therapeutic properties of raw apple cider vinegar. Many folks take it regularly as a digestive tonic 1 Tbsp in a C of warm water before meals. Here’s a diet regimen based around raw apple cider vinegar.
- Eat a small protein snack before going to bed (3-4 oz of chicken, beef, tuna, or tofu). Follow it with 1 C of water mixed with 1 Tbsp raw, organic apple cider vinegar
- When you wake up the next day, drink 1 C of water mixed with 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar and 1 Tbsp of raw honey. Do a short exercise routine and then have breakfast.
- Before lunch make 2 glasses of the mixture (each glass containing 1 C of water mixed with 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar and 1 Tbsp of raw honey). Drink 1 glass before lunch. Eat lunch and follow it with the second glassful. Don’t have any other beverages around the meal.
- Repeat the process at dinner.
Research has shown that vinegar can curb appetite and improve blood sugar control.
Feel free to follow this “diet” forever. You might get even more bang for you buck by adding KLB6 to your supplement regime too. And don’t forget to get out there and walk and smell the roses.
