Ayurvedic Breakfast Toast

for busy, back to school or work mornings…

Adam wrote in our July newsletter that current research says cinnamon lowers blood sugar by making insulin work more efficiently, and may also lower cholesterol.  He wrote that the noted naturopathic doctor, Bill Mitchell, sees impressive results with his patients’ cholesterol when they take ½ tsp of the powdered herb twice a day.  According to Ayurvedic principles, cinnamon helps diminish wet conditions in the body such as the runny nose that accompanies a cold.

Turmeric is touted in Ayurveda (and elsewhere) as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.  Ginger is said to improve circulation, and we all know ginger is the first thing we think about for nausea.  Did you know it’s also good for nervousness?  Who isn’t nervous going back to school or heading to a new job?

Enjoy the ghee or coconut oil!  Don’t worry about these fats.  According to Ayurvedic medicine they’re not stored like other fats, but boost energy and endurance, support thyroid function and increase metabolism (great if you want to lose weight).  They also are said to improve absorption of fat soluble vitamins, minerals (especially calcium and magnesium), and amino acids.   Make toast some chilly September mornings.  Take a minute to enjoy.

Makes 4 servings

3 tb honey or maple syrup 1 tsp powdered ginger
2 tb ghee or coconut oil ½ tsp powdered turmeric
1 tb powdered cinnamon 4 whole wheat English muffins or 8 slices whole wheat bread

Using a fork, combine honey or maple syrup with ghee or coconut oil and all spices until well blended. (Both ghee and coconut oil can be kept at room temperature.  When they are, they are soft and easy to mix with other things.)Slice muffins in half and toast.  If you’re using bread, toast that instead.  Spread either with spiced butter mixture and serve with a mug of your favorite herbal tea or warm hot milk (of any kind) with another sprinkle of cinnamon.  See other serving suggestions in the paragraph below.Enjoy every lip-smacking bite!  The spices and good carbs in whole grain bread calm and steady nerves.  Put a smile on one’s face.  Try with a glass of kefir or two soft-boiled eggs.  And a multivitamin, of course!
